This easy ginger turmeric shot recipe needs no juicer, takes just minutes to make, and delivers a bright, punchy wellness boost using simple, fresh ingredients. Made in a blender, it’s a quick and affordable way to enjoy ginger turmeric shots at home.

If you’ve ever looked at shop-bought wellness shots and thought “I really should make those myself…” (like my husband, who’s an M&S Hot Shot addict) – this recipe is for you.

It’s fresh, vibrant, and designed to fit easily into real life – whether you’re after immunity support, an anti-inflammatory boost, or just something zingy to wake you up.

I’m one of those people who owns a juicer but never actually uses it (… but isn’t that most people?) so discovering I could make these with my Nutribullet was a game changer.

It’s SO SIMPLE (I show you how here), taking less than 10 minutes to make and costing HALF the price of shop-bought wellness shots.

Not only that, they’re made FRESH, therefore minimising the nutrient loss that you can get from excess processing and storing.

So, it’s a no brainer really.

Let’s get blending! Tara x

(P.s. Don’t like HOT shots? Don’t panic! We’ve got a non-spicy option in the recipe card below!)

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS GINGER TURMERIC SHOT RECIPE

  • No juicer needed. Just a blender and a sieve, so it’s quick and easy to make.
  • Fresh, punchy and warming. Citrus, ginger and optional cayenne for a delicious kick!
  • Easy and affordable. Make in minutes and save up to 50% on shop-bought shots.
  • Supports wellbeing. Ginger and turmeric can offer anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidant benefits, with vitamin C from orange and lemon to help support your immune system during flu season (source).
  • Natural energy lift. The warming kick of ginger can help you feel more alert, without the need for caffeine (something that’s especially welcome during midlife energy dips).

Ginger turmeric shots are concentrated, so enjoy occasionally rather than daily. They may not be suitable for everyone and excessive consumption can cause digestive issues – therefore check with your doctor first (source).

HOW TO MAKE GINGER TURMERIC SHOTS

Here’s a summary of the simple ingredients needed and steps involved in making this ginger turmeric shot recipe (without a juicer).

INGREDIENTS FOR: GINGER TURMERIC JUICE SHOT

The ingredients needed to make a ginger turmeric juice shot, laid out on a table top

  • Orange juice (freshly squeezed): Adds natural sweetness and balances out the heat of the ginger and turmeric. Fresh juice gives the best flavour.

  • Lemon juice (freshly squeezed): Brightens the shot and gives a fresh and lively flavour. You can use lime juice if you prefer.

  • Fresh turmeric root: Gives colour, warmth and a boost of antioxidants (source).

Important note: Scrape off the peel – leaving it on will make the shot bitter.

Want to use dried turmeric?  Whilst I don’t recommend it (fresh, peeled turmeric is much smoother and less bitter), if you’re in a pinch, you can use up to 1 tsp dried turmeric in this recipe.  I’d recommend adding a tsp maple syrup and a bit of extra orange juice to the mixture though to combat the bitterness.

  • Fresh ginger root: Provides a warming kick. No need to peel, just wash well.

  • Black pepper: Believed to enhance the absorption of curcumin (the antioxidant in turmeric) (source).

  • Olive oil (optional): Again, believed to enhance the absorption of curcumin (source) but feel free to omit if you prefer.

  • Cayenne pepper (optional): For a spicy ‘kick’, if you like that kind of thing! Omit if you prefer your shots not to be spicy.

HOW TO MAKE GINGER TURMERIC SHOTS WITHOUT A JUICER

1. Blend it up. Squeeze the juice out of your fresh oranges and lemon. Add all of the ingredients to a high-speed blender (or food processor) and blend until smooth (about 30 seconds).

2. Strain. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve or muslin/cheesecloth into a jug.

TIPS FOR MAKING GINGER TURMERIC SHOTS

Scrape the peel off the turmeric. Turmeric peel is bitter so make sure to scrape it off before blending. We did this using a teaspoon; the peel comes away easily so no need to use a knife.

Don’t skip the black pepper. It’s important for maximising the health benefits of this juice (source). But, if you’re nervous about the flavour, just add a pinch of black pepper.

Go easy on the cayenne. I like a noticeable kick of spice in my wellness shots, but if that’s not your thing then just add a pinch of cayenne pepper, or omit it altogether.

Adjust to suit your taste. Prefer it sweeter? Add more orange juice next time. Like it sharper? Add less orange and more lemon.

Strain the juice well. Press firmly through the sieve (or squeeze the muslin cloth well) to get as much juice out of the pulp as possible.

Don’t like your ginger turmeric juice too strong? Feel free to add the juice shot to a glass of cold or warm water. But avoid using hot water as this can negatively impact the flavour and goodness in the juice.

HOW WE TESTED THIS GINGER TURMERIC SHOT RECIPE

We tried lots of variations of these ginger turmeric wellness shots so you don’t have to!

  • Peel or no peel? Peeling the turmeric is key – unpeeled turmeric can make your shot bitter, while ginger works fine either peeled or unpeeled. This means you get a smooth, punchy flavour every time without any bitter surprises.
  • Which fruit juice works best? We experimented with orange, lemon, apple and pineapple juices in varying quantities, to balance the strong ginger and turmeric flavours. The classic combo of orange and lemon won for taste, ingredient accessibility and speed (although pineapple is a lovely alternative).
  • Best way to sieve? We tested both a fine sieve and muslin cloth (nut milk bag). Either works, as long as it’s fine enough, so you can get a smooth shot without any fibrous bits.

HOW TO STORE

Fridge. Ideally consume the homemade juice fresh for maximum benefit and flavour, however if you’d like to store the juice then refrigerate straight away in a clean airtight jar or bottle. Consume within 2 days and shake well before drinking, as natural separation will occur.

Freezer. If you’d prefer to freeze these shots, pour the fresh juice into ice cube trays and freeze, then defrost overnight in the fridge, or blend the juice ice cubes with a little water. Consume within 24 hours of defrosting.

Note: Always keep this juice chilled (refrigerated or frozen) and discard if there any signs of spoilage. Like most fresh juices, homemade ginger shots are most nutritious when freshly made, as some vitamins and antioxidant properties can slowly degrade during storage or freezing.

FAQs

How do you make ginger and turmeric shots without a juicer?

Blend fresh ginger and fresh peeled turmeric in a blender with fresh orange juice and then strain through a fine sieve or muslin cloth.

It’s quick, simple, and easier to clean up than a juicer!

Can I make ginger turmeric shots with powder?

Whilst I don’t recommend it (fresh, peeled turmeric is much smoother and less bitter), if you’re in a pinch, you can use up to 1 tsp dried turmeric in this recipe.  I’d recommend adding a tsp maple syrup and a bit of extra orange juice to the mixture though to combat the bitterness.

Can ginger turmeric shots be frozen?

Absolutely. Freezing in ice cube trays is a great way to make these shots even more convenient.

Expect some separation once thawed – shake or stir to recombine.

Note: Like most fresh juices, ginger turmeric shots are most nutritious when freshly made, as some vitamins can slowly degrade during storage or freezing.
