What is Riverford?
Riverford is an award-winning organic farm and veg box company founded more than 30 years ago in Devon by Guy Singh-Watson. Riverford specialise in seasonal, organic produce delivered directly to homes across the UK. They’re certified organic by the Soil Association and focus on sustainability, local produce and reducing food waste.
With Riverford, you can choose from a wide range of organic veg boxes, fruit bags and recipe kits that include ingredients and instructions on how to cook inventive and seasonal meals at home.
Riverford Veg and Recipe Boxes: How Do They Work?
Veg Boxes
Each week, Riverford offer a variety of seasonal organic veg boxes. These vary in size and contents:
- Size: Small (1-2 people), medium (2-3 people) or large (3-4 people)
- Contents: (all containing organic vegetables)
- ‘Standard’ box (UK and non-UK seasonal produce)
- ‘Quick’ box (quick cook produce)
- ‘100% UK’ box
- ‘Zero Packaging’ box
- ‘Familiar Favourites’ box
With the Riverford box scheme, you choose the size and contents that suit you best, and you can amend this each week if you like. The contents of the upcoming box are shown on the app and website, which allows you to pick the box that you most like the look of.
Fruit and Veg Boxes
If you prefer, you can pick a ‘fruit and veg box’ which, as the name suggests, includes both organic fruit and veg! Riverford also offer fruit boxes, which contain a selection of fruit that you can order in addition to a veg box, or other items.
Add Ons
Riverford has lots of organic fruit and veg that can be ordered as individual items, so if there is something specific that you fancy, you can add this to your box.
- Don’t fancy any of the pre-made boxes? You can make up your own box by choosing from the wide array of fresh produce available. As long as you hit the minimum order value (currently £15), it’s not a problem!
- Essentials. Riverford also has a range of organic and often local ‘essentials’ you can add on to your delivery – from sourdough bread and dairy-free milk, to locally milled flour, hummus and even vegan mince pies!
Recipe Boxes
Each week, Riverford has a number of recipe boxes and kits available, which contain fresh organic produce, ingredients and step-by-step recipe cards to make healthy meals.
The ‘recipe boxes’ tend to be meals, whereas the ‘recipe kits’ tend to be for items such as chutneys, cakes and sides.
Do I have to order every week?
No! You can skip your next delivery, as long as it’s before the order deadline (usually a couple of days before the delivery is due).
How often do I need to order?
There is no set frequency – you can choose to have a regular order box/set items delivered every week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks or just as a ‘one off’. You can also skip deliveries or pause regular orders as needed.

Riverford Delivery Areas and Times
- Delivery Areas. Riverford organic farms deliver across most of England and Wales. You can check your postcode on their website here to see if they deliver to you (click the ‘get started’ button).
- Delivery Times. Your delivery day depends on your area; Riverford group deliveries in a certain area on one set day a week. They deliver from early in the morning to dinner time on your delivery day, but you don’t need to be in – they’ll leave your box in a safe place for you.
- Packaging. Packaging is minimal, with reusable or compostable materials used wherever possible. Riverford collect and reuses the veg delivery boxes, as well as some of the other packaging.
- I don’t remember the last time I received packaging from Riverford that I couldn’t recycle or compost! It’s one of the things I love about Riverford. If you are vegan, please note: the chilled items can be delivered in insulated wool packaging so you may wish to avoid ordering chilled items.
- Delivery Cost. Riverford offers free delivery, and this has been the case for the many years that I have ordered from Riverford (note: I am a paying customer). Riverford has no plans to change this, according to their website (see FAQ section here).

Riverford Customer Reviews and Ratings: What People Are Saying
When considering a service like Riverford, real user feedback can be very telling. Here’s a snapshot of what existing customers frequently praise – and sometimes critique – based on public reviews:
The Review Highlights
- High overall rating. Riverford has an average score of 4.8/5 based on nearly 20,000 reviews. This overview from Trustpilot sums it up: “Reviewers overwhelmingly had a great experience”!
- Freshness and quality. A consistent theme in the reviews is how fresh, flavoursome and seasonal the produce is, often compared favourably against supermarket counterparts.
- My experience: This is certainly my personal experience, the flavour of much of the produce and the quality of the ingredients that you get from Riverford is a world away from what you can get in the supermarket.
- Reliable delivery and communication. Reviewers often mention punctual deliveries, good communication and courteous delivery staff.
- My experience: My delivery is like clockwork; every Friday morning around 8am, and the delivery driver is always friendly! I think they may have missed one delivery in 5 years, but that was due to snow.
- Sustainability and packaging. Many reviews applaud the compostable or reusable packaging and the company’s eco-ethics.
- My experience: This is one of the things I love about Riverford, the packaging is almost always recyclable or compostable, or you can return it to Riverford to be reused. Supermarkets need to take a leaf out of Riverford’s book on the packaging front!
- Customer service responsiveness. In the rare cases of problems (e.g. a damaged item or substitution issue), customers acknowledge that the support team tends to be responsive and offers resolution.
- My experience: I have requested a refund for damaged items on perhaps 2 or 3 occasions in 5 years, and each time they have refunded the item quickly and without quibble.
Common Criticisms
- Price. Some reviews point out that Riverford’s boxes can feel more expensive than supermarket alternatives.
- Limited choice in recipe boxes. Riverford’s recipe boxes are praised for being organic and convenient, but some find the range of recipes limited.
- To give you an example, at the time of writing this article, there are 14 Riverford recipe boxes available, of which 5 are plant-based new recipes. Riverford also offer recipe kits for things like marmalade, chutney, sides and puddings.
- Occasional substitutions/oversupply. A few users mention getting vegetables they didn’t want or more of certain kinds than they could use.
- Website usability/order modifications. Some reviewers say the website or app can be a little cumbersome when adjusting boxes or modifying orders.
My Personal Review of Riverford
The public reviews above align closely with my personal experience as a paying, long-time user of Riverford (5+ years). I’ve found the quality of the produce to be almost always superior to what you can get in the supermarket, in terms of both flavour and freshness.
Delivery has always been dependable, and when an issue has arisen (very rarely), it has been rectified promptly and fully.
Yes, the produce is more expensive than in the supermarket, however, there are very few organic options available in my local supermarket, so the offer is not really comparable.
Personally, I balance the increased cost by ordering less frequently, once every couple of weeks or so. Between orders, I pick up good quality produce from my local garden centre food hall or farm shop. Although this may not be organic, it’s still of superior quality (and far less plastic) than what the supermarket has to offer.
Overall, the overwhelmingly positive feedback from nearly 20k users provides confidence that Riverford delivers value for those who care about quality, seasonality and sustainability.
Why I Love Riverford
- Organic and sustainable. All produce is certified organic and is often local.
- Quality and flavour. The high quality produce is noticeably fresher than supermarket produce. (Their figs, blood oranges and bunched carrots are *chef’s kiss*!)
- Convenience. Regular, reliable home delivery of great quality produce.
- Inspiration in the kitchen. Getting random fruit, wonky veg and interesting mushrooms that I would not usually buy (or more often, would not even be available in the supermarket!) is great for inspiring creativity in my cooking. Riverford has a lot of online recipes to help you use the veg you receive, as well as often including a leaflet with tips in each veg box.
