Is a Vitamix blender worth the money?

If you’re a regular blender-user, then yes!

Vitamix blenders work hard and can last for many years (ours is currently 6 years old and still going strong). In our experience they’re powerful, good quality and versatile.

Do Vitamix blenders have limitations? Of course. They can struggle blending small quantities of ingredients and may need more liquid or the use of the tamper to help blend tough ingredients, such as nut butter or frozen fruit ‘ice cream’.

Vitamix blenders are so powerful that the friction can even cause the ingredients to warm up. Great if you’re making soup… but not as useful if you’re making a cold smoothie!

The Vitamix Explorian Series is a great option for home use. But which is better, the Vitamix E310 or the E320? Let’s start with the stats.

So, which model performs better, the E310 or the E320? Let’s find out in our performance review!

Performance: Vitamix E310 vs E320

Let’s see how each of the Vitamix models compare and measure up in the toughest of performance tests:

Smoothies

Star ratings graphic: e310 has 4.5* and e320 has 4*

Reviews report that both the E310 and E320 do a wonderful job of blending smoothies.

In just 45 seconds, frozen fruit, fibrous greens and seeds are all obliterated; with both units performing exceptionally well. No berry seeds to be found!

For best results add the liquid first and be sure to add enough liquid – if your smoothie is too thick, you’ll likely need to use the tamper.

Some Vitamix E320 reviews noted that the wider container of the E320 occasionally struggles with frozen fruit and ice and can leave some large chunks, so you may need to use the tamper more with this model.

Ice cream

Star ratings graphic: both models have 4*

Both units perform well at blending frozen fruit into ice cream. Performance is noted as being very similar, despite this being a tough test for many blenders.

Making ice cream in a Vitamix can be a slow process, but with a low speed, help from the tamper and a splash of dairy free milk to help things along, you can create a beautifully smooth ice cream from frozen bananas and berries.

Nut butter

Star ratings graphic: both models have 4*

The reviews for both the E310 and E320 report good results when making nut butters. It’s a tough challenge for any blender but with a slow speed, the use of a tamper and a helping of patience, you should be able to get decent results.

Both units can struggle if you’re trying to make small quantities. Scrape down the sides of the container between blends, making sure not to overheat the motor and add a little oil to help move things along if needed.

One downside to both units is it can be difficult to get all of the nut butter out from around the blades. A spatula can help with this (once the container is taken off of the base unit) but there is still some wastage.

Soup

Star ratings graphic: both models have 4*

If you like silky smooth soup, this is one area a Vitamix excels. Both the E310 and the E320 are powerhouse blenders and blend soups into a silky consistency in no time.  The only real downside is the noise, with many users complaining about this!

Both Vitamix models perform to a high standard when making soup and the 10% difference in motor horsepower between the E310 (2.0 horsepower) and the E320 (2.2 horsepower), seems to make very little difference in performance.

Bear in mind that if you like to make big soup batches, the larger 2L container of the E320 may be more suitable for you.

Ease of use and functionality

Controls and functionality

The controls on both Vitamix models are the same and are kept simple and easy to use.

Some reviewers expected a more premium feel for the price-point, particularly in the dial and on off switch which can feel a little cheap on both models.

Self cleaning appears to work well (just add warm water and a drop of washing up liquid and blend for 30-60 seconds).

Container use

The containers on both models have measurement lines which is helpful.

The spout makes for easy pouring with few spills.

Container size

Here is one of the main differences in the Vitamix E310 vs E320: The E310 has a 1.4L container as standard and the E320 has a 2L container (low-profile 64-oz container).

The containers on both are ‘low profile’ (short) as opposed to tall, with the higher capacity E320 having a wider container as a result. This means that both Vitamix models should fit under a standard kitchen unit.

Both containers can feel a little wobbly, particularly when using the tamper, since the containers don’t ‘lock in’ to the base.

The 1.4L container of the E310 is more suited to use by 1-2 people, whereas the 2L E320 container is better for family use or bigger batch blending.

Some reviews report that the wider E320 container sometimes misses chunks of frozen fruit when blending, however this can usually be resolved through the use of the tamper.

Cleaning

The instruction manuals for both the E310 and E320 mention the use of a dishwasher cycle for cleaning, however the Vitamix website states that they do not recommend putting the container or lid into the dishwasher.

Lid use

A number of Vitamix E310 reviews report that the lid can be difficult to put on and remove.

Noise

This is probably the number one complaint for both models – they’re both loud, particularly at maximum speed!

If you’ve got sensitive neighbours, thin walls or sleeping children in the house, you may find this hard to put up with.

Power

The Vitamix brand is well known for producing some of the most powerful household blenders and these two models are no exception.

The Vitamix horsepower is impressive, with the E310 sitting at 2 horsepower and the E320 at 2.2 horsepower.  Many reviews note that the power of these Vitamix models is far superior to other brands, and that is certainly our experience of of our own Vitamix too.

The 0.2 difference in horsepower between the two models seems to make very little (if any difference) in performance.

Power cord length

The length of the cord is very good at 1.37m (4.5ft) on both models and you can wind it underneath the base to keep it tidy.

Safety

Users report that there doesn’t appear to be a ‘lock in’ mechanism, so the blender container can wobble if the base is knocked.

The blades can also be accessed when they’re in motion as the removal of the lid does not seem to cut out the motor. Something to bear in mind if you’ve got children at home.

Vitamix Reliability and Warranty

The Vitamix E310 comes with a 5 year warranty and the E320 comes with a 7 year warranty from Vitamix UK (at the time of writing).

Vitamix are well known for their excellent build quality, with many Vitamix users reporting that their units long exceed the warranty in age. Our Vitamix is coming up for 6 years old with no sign of stopping!

Whilst being able to purchase replacement parts is useful, bear in mind that these can be expensive. A replacement or additional container can be around £125-£145 and tampers £15.  Also bear in mind that the E320 is scheduled to be discontinued so spare parts may not be available for much longer.

Conclusion

Which is better – the Vitamix Explorian E310 or the E320?

Our choice is the Vitamix E310 for these reasons:

  1. The E310 is cheaper – saving between £20-£200 depending on which supplier you buy from.
  2. The performance of the E310 and E320 is almost identical, however due to the wider container, the E320 is more prone to missing some larger chunks of ingredients such as frozen fruit.
  3. The E320 is being discontinued, according to Vitamix, which could make it more difficult to get spares, should it come to that.

Both of these Vitamix blenders have rave reviews, with the top comment being ‘I wish I’d bought one sooner!’

Note: The E320 does come with a larger (2L) container and a longer warranty than the E310 (7 years vs 5 years with Vitamix UK). That said, the 1.4L container of the E310 should be big enough for most households, and Vitamix machines are known for their reliability – so hopefully you’ll never need that extra warranty! Still, if you often make large-batch soups, or want the reassurance of a longer guarantee, the E320 remains a fantastic option.
