How Do You Make This Matcha Latte Oat Milk Recipe?

It’s quick and easy to make an oat milk matcha latte at home! Here’s what you’ll need to make your own matcha latte at home:

  1. Matcha powder (pick a high-quality matcha powder)
  2. Oat milk (ideally barista-style or full-fat oat milk)
  3. Maple syrup (you can sub for agave syrup if you prefer)
  4. A matcha bamboo whisk

OAT MILK TIP: Pick a barista-style oat milk if it’s available in your local store. Barista oat milks tend to be creamier and more stable when exposed to heat.

OTHER NON-DAIRY MILKS: You can switch out the oat milk for another plant milk of your choice. We like oat milk as it has a neutral flavour and tends to be naturally sweet but you can try another type of milk.  Soy milk is another good option for a creamy matcha latte, as are cashew milk, coconut milk and almond milk, although these will all impart a different flavour into your green tea latte.

Here are two ways to make a delicious matcha latte at home (click here to get the full recipe with measurements on the recipe card):

How to make this matcha latte on the hob:

  1. Add 1 tsp of matcha tea powder to a saucepan (off the heat) with 1-2 tbsp of oat milk.
  2. Whisk the matcha mixture to a smooth paste, ideally using a matcha whisk*. Add the maple syrup and whisk again until smooth.
  3. Add the rest of your milk and whisk until the matcha is fully dissolved.
  4. Heat the mixture gently on the hob until warm through, whisking occasionally. Don’t let the mixture boil.
  5. Taste and add more syrup if desired to suit your taste preferences.

* Note: Use a bamboo matcha whisk for best results and to create a smoother matcha. Alternatively, you can use a small whisk to blend the mixture, however, it will likely be less effective at blending the fine powder with the milk.

How to make a matcha latte with an electric milk frother:

  1. Add 1 teaspoon of matcha powder to a cup or small bowl.

  2. Add 3 tbsp of hot water and whisk, using a bamboo matcha whisk, until the mixture is smooth.

  3. Heat the oat milk using an electric milk frother until warm through.

  4. Add the frothy milk to the cup and mix well with the matcha.

  5. Taste and increase the level of sweetness with a dash more syrup if required.

What are the benefits of matcha?

Let’s explore the potential health benefits of matcha.  Matcha is a green tea powder made from ground green tea leaves.  As well as providing a more gentle energy boost, matcha green tea is believed to be rich in natural antioxidants, which may help to prevent cell damage.

It is also believed that matcha may help to protect the liver and prevent cancer, enhance brain function, promote heart health and enhance weight loss (source). Wow!
