As with all food leftovers, be sure to practice good food safety; the BCCDC recommends refrigerating cooked potatoes within 2 hours of being cooked. Once cooled to room temperature, keep your cooked potatoes in an airtight container in the fridge and the USDA recommends you use them within 3 days.

HOW TO REHEAT BAKED SWEET POTATOES

In this section, we’ll show you the best methods for reheating baked sweet potatoes (or jacket potatoes as they’re also known in the UK!).

You can use the oven, microwave, stovetop, air fryer or BBQ to reheat your baked sweet potato.  The best method of reheating baked sweet potatoes is to oven bake, to maintain a crispy skin.

Which method is best? Oven bake for best results (20 mins)

Which method is quickest? Microwaving is the quickest method (2 mins)

How to reheat baked sweet potato in the oven

Reheating a baked sweet potato in the oven is the best method in our opinion because the skin should crisp up again. Here’s how to reheat sweet potato in the oven:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan (200°C conventional / 400°F / gas mark 6).
  2. Place the whole baked sweet potato on a metal baking sheet, uncovered.
  3. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the potato is hot through and the skin has become crisp.

How to reheat baked sweet potato in the microwave

Can you heat up a baked sweet potato in the microwave? Yes, it’s a great option, especially if time is short! Just be aware that the skin will not crisp up using this method.

Here’s how to reheat a baked sweet potato with the microwave method:

  1. Cut the baked sweet potato in half and place it in a microwave-safe bowl or dish.
  2. Cover the dish with a vented silicone cover or eco cling film with holes stabbed in it.
  3. Microwave on full power for around 2 minutes or until the potato is hot through.

How to reheat baked sweet potato on the stove/hob

Believe it or not, you can reheat a baked sweet potato on the stovetop! Here’s how:

  1. Heat 1 tsp of olive oil in a skillet/frying pan.
  2. Cut the baked potato in half and place it, cut side down, in the pan.
  3. Place a lid on the pan and cook until the potato is hot through (approximately 10 minutes).
  4. Flip the potato over and fry for a further 2 minutes to crisp up the skin side a little.

How to reheat baked sweet potato in the air fryer

Here’s how to reheat a baked sweet potato in the air fryer:

  1. Place the baked sweet potato in the air fryer basket and heat for 4-5 minutes at 180°C (350°F), until hot through.
  2. You may need to add an additional minute if your potato is particularly large.

How to reheat baked sweet potato on the BBQ

If you’ve got the barbecue on the go, it can be an effective way to heat up your baked potato whilst you cook your veggie burgers.  Here’s how:

  1. Wrap the baked potato tightly in aluminum foil and place on the bbq for 10-15 minutes until hot through (15 minutes for a larger potato, 10 minutes for a smaller one).
  2. Turn the potato a few times during cooking using barbecue tongs.

How to cook a baked sweet potato from raw

To bake a sweet potato from raw, follow these steps:

  1. Wash and dry the sweet potato.
  2. Trim off any rough ends.
  3. Carefully stab the potato all over with a fork or knife.
  4. Place the potato on an unlined baking tray.
  5. Use your hands to rub olive oil all over the skin to coat it (around 1 tsp for a large potato) and sprinkle with sea salt.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C fan (220°C conventional / 425°F / gas mark 7) for 45 minutes – 1 hour (depending on size). To test if the potato is baked through, insert a knife into the thickest part; if it feels soft all the way through it should be baked and ready to serve.

HOW TO REHEAT SWEET POTATO FRIES

In this section, we’ll show you the best methods for reheating sweet potato fries so that they stay crisp.

Sweet potato fries are always best when served fresh, however, you can reheat them in the oven, air fryer or on the hob and produce ok results. Avoid the microwave unless you enjoy soggy fries!

Which method is best? Oven baking (5 mins)

Which method is quickest? Air fryer (2 mins)

How to reheat sweet potato fries in the oven

The best method of reheating sweet potato fries and gaining back some of that crispiness is to use the oven. Watch out though, the fries can burn quickly so keep an eye on them!

Here’s how to reheat sweet potato fries in the oven:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan (200°C conventional / 400°F / gas mark 6).
  2. Line a metal baking tray with parchment paper and spread out the cooked sweet potato fries on the lined tray. (Don’t skip the parchment paper otherwise they’ll likely burn).
  3. Cook for 5-7 minutes until hot through and crisp. Watch them carefully for the last couple of minutes because they can burn easily.

How to reheat sweet potato fries in air fryer

To reheat sweet potato fries in the air fryer, follow these steps:

  1. Place the cooked fries in an even layer in the air fryer basket.
  2. Cook for approximately 2-3 minutes at 180°C (350°F), until hot through

How to reheat sweet potato fries on the hob

Here’s how to reheat sweet potato fries on the hob:

  1. Heat a little spray oil in a large frying pan/skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the cooked fries to the pan and fry for around 4 minutes until hot and crispy.
  3. Note: If you don’t have any spray oil for this method you can use a very small amount of pourable oil such as olive oil but please note that the fries may be a little greasy and less crisp.

How to cook sweet potato fries from raw

To cook sweet potato fries from raw, follow these steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C fan (220°C conventional / 425°F / gas mark 7).
  2. Peel your sweet potato and cut into skinny fries (0.5cm – 0.75cm thick / 1/4” – 1/3”). Toss them in olive oil and a generous pinch of salt.
  3. Spread the fries out on a large baking tray lined with parchment paper. Ensure the fries are in a single layer and are not overlapping. (Don’t skip the parchment paper otherwise they’ll likely burn).
  4. Cook for 15 minutes, turn the fries over and then cook for a further 5-10 minutes until crisp. Watch them carefully in the last few minutes so that you can take them out of the oven before they burn on the edges.

HOW TO REHEAT SWEET POTATO WEDGES

In this section we’ll show you how to reheat sweet potato wedges in the oven or air fryer. Both methods work well and prevent the wedges from going soggy.

Which method is quickest? Air fryer (3 mins)

How to reheat sweet potato wedges in the oven

To reheat sweet potato wedges in the oven, follow these steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan (200°C conventional / 400°F / gas mark 6).
  2. Place the cooked sweet potato wedges on a metal baking tray and place in the preheated oven for approximately 10 minutes until they are hot through.

How to reheat sweet potato wedges in the air fryer

Here’s how to reheat sweet potato wedges in the air fryer:

  1. Place your cooked sweet potato wedges in the air fryer basket in a single layer.
  2. Cook for approximately 3 minutes at 180°C (350°F) until hot through.

How to cook sweet potato wedges from raw

To cook sweet potato wedges from raw, follow these steps:

  1. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into large, thick wedges.
  2. Place the potato wedges on a large, unlined metal baking tray.  It’s a good idea to leave plenty of space in between the wedges (you don’t want the potatoes overlapping).
  3. Drizzle the wedges in olive oil plus a generous sprinkle of salt, dried rosemary and garlic granules. Toss to coat.
  4. Place in an oven preheated to 200°C fan (220°C conventional / 425°F / gas mark 7).
  5. Bake for 15 minutes, turn the potatoes over and then bake for 10 more minutes.
  6. At this point the potatoes should be cooked through with slightly crisp edges. If you’d like them more crispy, and they’re not burning on the edges, you can give them another 5-10 minutes in the oven.

Tip: Try sweet potato wedges served in crispy lettuce wraps, with a layer of guacamole, a zig-zag of ketchup and a sprinkling of vegan parmesan, yum!

HOW TO REHEAT DICED SWEET POTATO

In this section, we’ll show you how to reheat diced sweet potato (or Parmentier sweet potatoes) using the oven, air fryer or hob.  The quickest and easiest way is to use the air fryer but the hob produces slightly crispier results.

Which method is best? Hob (5-10 mins)

Which method is quickest? Air fryer (2 mins)

How to reheat diced sweet potato on the hob

Here’s how to reheat diced sweet potato on the hob:

  1. Preheat a tsp of olive oil in a frying pan or skillet until hot.
  2. Add the cooked diced sweet potato and fry until hot through (around 5 minutes).
  3. Fry for 5 minutes more if you’d like them to crisp up on the edges.  Sauteed sweet potatoes are a delicious side dish!

How to reheat diced sweet potato in the oven

To reheat diced sweet potato in the oven, follow these steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan (200°C conventional / 400°F / gas mark 6).
  2. Place the cooked diced sweet potato in a single layer on a metal baking tray. Spray with a little cooking oil.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for around 10 minutes until hot.

How to reheat diced sweet potato in the air fryer

For a quick and easy method of reheating diced sweet potato, choose the air fryer:

  1. Add the cooked diced sweet potato into the air fryer basket in a single layer.
  2. Cook at 180°C (350°F) for around 2-3 minutes until hot through.

How to cook diced sweet potato (Parmentier sweet potato) from raw

To cook diced sweet potato from raw, follow these steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C fan (220°C conventional / 425°F / gas mark 7).
  2. Peel the sweet potato and cut it into cubes (approx 1cm square).
  3. Toss the sweet potato cubes in oil, a sprinkle of paprika, ground cumin and salt.
  4. Place the diced sweet potato on a metal baking tray.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, turn the cubes over and then bake for a further 5 minutes until cooked through.

HOW TO REHEAT ROASTED SWEET POTATOES

In this section, we’ll show you how to reheat roast sweet potatoes in the oven or air fryer. Both methods work well and prevent the roast potatoes from going soggy (avoid the microwave though!).

How to reheat roasted sweet potatoes in the oven

Here’s how to reheat your sweet potato roasties in the oven:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan (200°C conventional / 400°F / gas mark 6).
  2. Place your roast sweet potatoes on a metal baking tray and bake for 15 minutes, until hot through.

How to reheat roasted sweet potatoes in the air fryer

To reheat your roast sweet potatoes in the air fryer, follow these steps:

  1. Place your roast sweet potatoes in the air fryer basket in a single layer.
  2. Cook for 4-5 minutes at 180°C (350°F) until hot through.

How to cook roast sweet potatoes from raw

To cook roast sweet potatoes from raw, follow these steps:

  1. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into large chunks (approx 2” / 5cm thick).
  2. Place the potato chunks on a large, unlined, metal baking tray, with plenty of space in between (you don’t want the potatoes overlapping).
  3. Drizzle the potatoes in olive oil plus a generous sprinkle of salt, dried rosemary and garlic granules. Toss to coat.
  4. Place in an oven preheated to 200°C fan (220°C conventional / 425°F / gas mark 7). Make sure the oven is fully preheated – you want it to be hot for cooking roast potatoes!
  5. Bake for 20 minutes, turn the potatoes over and then bake for 20 more minutes.
  6. At this point the potatoes should be cooked through with crisp edges. If you’d like them more crispy, and they’re not burning on the edges, you can give them another 5-10 minutes in the oven.

HOW TO REHEAT MASHED SWEET POTATOES

Sweet potato mash reheats very well using a variety of methods.  In this section, we’ll show you how to reheat mashed sweet potato on the hob, in the microwave or in the oven (including our favourite method of fried mashed potato *chef’s kiss*).

Which method is best? Hob (3-15 minutes)

Which method is quickest? Microwave is the quickest way (2 minutes)

How to reheat mashed sweet potato on the hob (saucepan method)

To reheat mashed sweet potato on the hob, follow these steps:

  1. Place the mashed sweet potato in a saucepan with a knob of vegan butter and a splash of plant-based milk (this helps to loosen the mixture as it will have thickened in the fridge overnight).
  2. Place the saucepan on the hob and stir the mixture over medium heat until hot through. This should take around 3-5 minutes but the time will vary depending on the quantity of mash you are heating up.

How to reheat mashed sweet potato on the hob (frying method)

Frying is our favourite method of reheating mashed sweet potatoes! Here’s how to do it:

  1. Heat 1-2 tsp of olive oil or coconut oil in a large frying pan or skillet over medium/high heat.
  2. Add the mashed potato and press it down to make a layer around 1cm thick.
  3. Fry for around 10 minutes on the first side until golden and crisp.
  4. Use your spatula to divide the layer of mashed potato into three or four sections, then flip these over and fry for another 5 minutes on the second side.
  5. Note: Dividing the layer of mashed potato into sections makes it easier to flip. The important thing is to let the potato cook until it’s golden and crisp so if it needs another 5-10 minutes to get nice and crispy, let it carry on frying.

Tip: Serve fried mashed potato on buttered toast with a zig-zag of brown sauce. A breakfast comfort food classic that was a family favorite from my childhood!

How to reheat mashed sweet potato in the microwave

Microwaving is also a great way for reheating mashed sweet potato. Here’s how we do it:

  1. Transfer your mashed sweet potato into a microwave-safe dish.
  2. Stir in some plant-based milk (enough to loosen the mixture and prevent the mash from drying out during the reheating process.  Cover the dish with a vented silicone cover or eco plastic wrap with holes stabbed in it.
  3. Microwave for 1 minute and 30 seconds.
  4. Add a knob of vegan butter to the mashed potato, cover and microwave for another 30 seconds.
  5. Stir in the melted butter and check that the potato is hot through (if not, microwave again for 30 seconds before checking again).

How to reheat mashed sweet potato in the oven

Here’s how to reheat mashed sweet potato in the oven:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan (200°C conventional / 400°F / gas mark 6).
  2. Transfer your leftover mashed sweet potato into an oven-proof dish.
  3. Stir in a little dairy free milk (enough to loosen the mixture) and add a knob of butter on top.
  4. Cover the dish in foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.
  5. Stir in the melted butter once the potato is out of the oven and check that it is hot through before serving.

How to cook mashed sweet potato from raw

To cook mashed sweet potato from raw, follow these steps:

  1. Peel the sweet potato and cut it into chunks (approx 2cm square).
  2. Place the potato chunks into a large saucepan and cover with cold water.
  3. Bring the water to the boil and cook for 10 minutes until the cubes are tender when a knife is pressed into them.
  4. Drain all of the water out of the pan. Mash the potato with knob of vegan butter or a little olive oil and a generous sprinkling of salt and ground black pepper.

Notes:

Cooking time can vary due to the size variation in sweet potatoes. A medium-sized sweet potato weighs approximately 130g (4.6oz); if your sweet potato is on the smaller size (<120g) opt for a slightly lower cook time and if your sweet potato is on the larger size (>150g) you may need to cook for longer to get it hot through. Always ensure the sweet potato is hot all the way through before serving.
